Dear members of the Black community, we support you in thought, word, spirit and action

Jun 15, 2020

We are painfully aware that the response from a large number of South Asians for the Black community has been negligent till now. We are very conscious that we should have connected with you in your ongoing struggle for equality and justice. Our minds have been engaged with the problems that beset our own community to establish itself on many levels. And more so, we have been hard pressed to remove the racism that many of our community harbor.

The following commentary by activist/lawyer Deepa Iyer resonates with us deeply and we would like to share it with all concerned. As Deepa says, it is important to build bridges. We shall.

South Asians and Black Lives
- Deepa Iyer

For South Asians committed to ending state violence against Black people, it has always been clear that our work goes further, that we must also work to undo anti-Blackness within our own communities. The hard conversations with our parents and our uncles and aunties about white supremacy, anti-Black racism, and solidarity are not usually easy or fruitful.
