“When I arrived in the States, I was full of hope. I was even offered a transfer from my job in information technology in India. But, my husband would not allow me to work, drive a car or open my own bank account. I became totally dependent on my husband. He kept me away from the neighbors and I was not allowed to speak with my family in India. I was verbally and physically abused for several years. A few months ago, my husband hit me with his belt and threw me out of the house in the middle of the night. I spent the night on the steps of my apartment building. In the morning, I knocked on a neighbor’s door. The neighbor called the police, who then contacted ASHA for Women.

Thanks to Priya, my ASHA for Women advocate, I have been able to reconnect with my family in India, have obtained a work visa and now have a job as an Information Technology Specialist. I know that Priya will be there to help me to achieve my goals and rebuild my life.”

Volunteer with ASHA for Women

What is a volunteer advocate?

ASHA Volunteer advocates provide information that empowers women to make their own decisions towards living a life free of abuse. Clients can discuss their options and decisions with an advocate without the fear of criticism or shame. In addition, advocates do not give professional legal or mental health advice and sign a confidentiality agreement.
