The year ends with a roll call of 100 Defiant, Creative, Influential, Pioneering, Resilient women of the world profiled by BBC as Most Inspirational. Among this list is Neha Singh, an actor and writer at Mumbai, who has founded a movement to defy harassment and encourage women to seek freedom of movement even at night. These 100 are a must see, must read, at http://www.bbc.com/news/world-38012048.
Earlier this year Pakistan’s Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy won an Oscar for her incredible documentary on honor killings. A sensitized government has been led to pass legislation tightening the laws on this outrageous form of violence on women.
In Iran, there’s a saucy defiance taking place, called ‘My Stealthy Freedom’! Interestingly, the movement, which started a couple of years ago, is being supported by men. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUYsO-1_0pE
In India, women have won the right to enter the hallowed portals of the Haji Ali Mosque at Mumbai after a long struggle.
Then murmurs of social change come in a small but significant way from Afghanistan. Going against Taliban strictures, men have found a way to take their wives to an evening of fun! See https://www.newsdeeply.com/womenandgirls/escaping-the-talibans-legacy-with-a-trip-to-the-movies/
And of course these are only some of the stories that show the world is changing fundamentally towards women. We can cheer up!
A very happy new year to all of you, our survivors, our volunteers, our supporters, well wishers and social changers!
