Enough to turn your hair white – the story of elder abuse.

Jul 08, 2016

This awareness video was produced by The Government of Alberta, in partnership with the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Network.

We’ve been guilty. While giving our attention to survivors mostly in the age group of 18 – 45 years, we’ve been forgetful of women who’ve grown old and grey in abusive relationships. They exist not in the fringes but right in front of us where we have blindspots, rarely making headlines until some really unsavory situation sends out shockwaves.

The truth is oppressors don’t necessarily grow nicer as they grow older. Domestic violence continues even as muscles slacken. It takes less force to tyrannize a frail person economically, emotionally, physically. With increased dependency there’s an increased inability to complain or seek help and if a bone cracks most think it must surely have been an old age thing. So these survivors carry on, the abuse often undetected even by medical professionals who are trained to spot signs of physical violence.

Further, if you look at elder abuse in the broader sense, not gender specific, not ‘domestic violence’ specific, the picture is truly grim.  See statistics below, researched in December 2015, source National Center on Elder Abuse, Bureau of Justice Statistics.

CHECK THE SIGNS AND ACT

Call the police or 9-1-1 immediately if someone you know is in immediate, life-threatening danger. If not, you can reach the Eldercare Locator by telephone at 1-800-677-1116. Specially trained operators will refer you to a local agency that can help.

You do not need to prove that abuse is occurring; it is up to the professionals to investigate the suspicions.
